Solid Door Reefer

A relatively small number of cars have turned up over the years with solid color doors. Most are baggage cars. A few have been boxcars. This one is a reefer. What happened in the production of these pieces for them to have solid doors? I suspect that they were out of litho doors and needed to get product out the door. Not having time to run litho sheets for doors they simply took solid color stock sheet metal and had the doors punched out to keep production rolling. The small quantity that show up indicates that this did not happen often, and when it did, the doors were being lithographed while these solid doors were being used. As soon as the litho doors were available the solid door use was ended.
