No. 5 Tank on Flat

This is one of the rarest Marx military pieces. The No. 5 tank is generally found as a roll-over in blue , yellow and orange lithography (shown below). This one, in the green litho, just does not show up too often. The flat car that it rides on is equally elusive. I have only seen these two pieces together a few times. The flat car has a special frame that could not be faked without leaving several tell-tale signs. Some collectors be;lieve that either the olive or the orange tank are correct. That might be but the olive tank is more correct!

No. 5 Tank Flat

As you can see in this picture the flat car has a special piece of sheet metal which clamps the tank to the flat. It is the attachment of this piece that requires the special frame. Also note the solid bottom of the tank. This is a Sparkling, not a Turn Over tank.

No. 25 Tank

Here are two versions of this tank that could easily have been loads but were not. The one on the left is Marx while the right tank is Linemar (Marx Japan).

No. 25 Tank

This is the underside of the 25 tanks. Both are turn-overs with the left being flipped by a soldier while the right tank is turned over by Superman. Clark's body is broken off, only the head remains. Must be Kryptonite in that tank!. There are many variations of the Superman tank including a silver litho, chrome plated, and gold plated versions.

Flintstones & Popeye Tank

These tanks must have been wildly popular because Marx seems to have made an unending series of them. Here are the Flintstones and one of the Popeye turn-over tanks. There are at least two versions of the Popeye tank including blue litho.

No. 25 Tank

This is the underside of the Flintstones and Popeye tanks. Interesting that Fred had to be face out while Popeye's body is distinctive enough that he is recognizable from the back!

No 5 Turn-Over & British Tank

Here is the more common orange version of the No 5 tank (left) alongside its British counterpart.

No. 5 Tank

This is the underside of the two tanks above showing the common flipping arm.

No. 5 Sparkling Tank

This is the sparkling (no turn-over arm) version of the No. 5 tank shown with its box.

There are other versions of these tanks including one made by Plastimarx (Marx Mexico).

No 5 Turn-Over & British Tank No. 5 Tank

I purchased this tank some time ago believing I had turned up another Japanese variation. In fact it is a good knock-off. Very similar in size and shape it is almost indistinguishable from the Marx unless held side by side.

No 5 Turn-Over & British Tank No. 5 Tank

This is a Chinese tank I purchased believing it was made from the Marx tooling. It is not. It is about 20% larger all around. But it has Jetson which is probably just different enough from "The Jetson's" to be legal! Oh well! It was cheap. Maybe 50 years from now it will be as valuable, relatively, as A Marx Jetson's tank is today.
