This Pennsylvania high sided gondola is not listed in any Marx book that I have seen, and
no, I did not put this together. Being a tab and slot eight wheel car, it would have been
a separate sale item. If you think you have one of these note that the high sided gondola
does not have the triangular cut-outs in the sides that distinguish the hopper.
This web site is paying off. Here, finally, after three years I have found something I have
been looking for. A brown Pennsylvania high sided gondola in a set.
This set was found by a collector who has properly evaluated it to be an original set, in
my opinion. No indication that it is a "put together set", although it was not in the
original box. The set included the unusual "Real Railroad Problems"
instruction sheet (IS 56) for additional play value.
Here's the Gondola.
Here's that unusual Instruction Sheet "Real Railroad Problems".

Now this one is listed in the identification guides but it is the only 4 wheel version that I have seen.

This Pennsylvania hopper
has a black litho interior. I have seen a few of these and all have only the hopper insert
piece (not the sides) in black. It seems they are usually made from overlithographed sheet
metal stock. On this one you can see details of a 556 caboose under the black ink. Another
legitimate version of the hopper has the interior painted brown.
