This British Marx clockwork freight set is a rare find. The set is pretty much what is
pictured on the box which is somewhat unusual for Marx! I found this one a number of years ago and had
to pay for it. I think the British Marx sets are some of the most interesting.
This box, in typical English fashion, is heavier and of better quality than the domestic
counterparts.
The wind-up engine is the same as Trip Riley's engine pictured elsewhere in this site.
The tender is particularily English, using none of the American tooling.
The stock car is produced from the tooling for the No. 59, U.P., slotted stock car.
The tank car looks like it is made from the tooling for the 553 Middle States Oil tank car
but it is longer by about one inch. I especially like the cables securing the dome. I
wonder if this is accurate?
Unlike the 553, the Benzine cars have lithographed ends and dome. Another one of those
extra touches Marx employed in order to appeal to the more discriminating British market.
The Gondola appears to be made from the 552 tooling.
