556B COPPER/BRASS CABOOSEITEM NO.-------346
TYPE--------------6" Tin
TRUCKS----------8 Wheel
COUPLER-------AC
NOTES------------This caboose first surfaced in the mid nineties. I purchased it at the time knowing it was something that could not be faked. Although it is not lettered as a prototype there is no doubt this came from the Marx R&D department. Discussions between Marx collectors have concluded this was probably fabricated at the time Marx produced the copper/brass CP engine and tender. They were probably considering a caboose to match the set. Why it never got past the R&D department is unknown but it is likely they rejected it as too gaudy. There is no doubt about this item originating at Marx and not in some collector's basement. The slot for Joy Line couplers on the ends indicates this to be from the 1938 era, just when it would be expected. The body and cupola are regular stampings but from the brass/copper sheet as used on the brass/copper tenders. Ends, frame, trucks, and couplers are regular production.
